AN extension block worth RM120mil will be built to overcome overcrowding at the Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR) in Klang.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the proposed eight-storey block would be able to accommodate 300 beds.
He said construction would start this year and was expected to be completed in three to four years.
Dr Subramaniam said he was confident that the new block would provide a permanent solution to the shortage of beds at the hospital.
Currently, he said, the wards at the hospital were overcrowded because of a lack of space.
“The hospital has had to put 20 additional beds in each ward,’’ he said, adding that the wards were crammed as there were 60 beds instead of 40.
Dr Subramaniam added that HTAR had a total of 893 beds and received some 2,000 outpatients daily.
Describing the hospital as one of the busiest in the country, he added that HTAR had taken various measures to address the shortage of beds.
Besides having mobile beds, he said the hospital had also created a lounge for patients to wait while being discharged.
“This is to free the beds while patients wait for their papers to be ready or family members to pick them up.
“It will also allow for newly-admitted patients to be warded as soon as possible,’’ he said
StarMetro on Dec 2 had reported on the overcrowding at hospitals.
It was reported that beds had been placed on the corridors of the wards because of the huge number of inpatients.
Similar scenes were also reported at Hospital Kajang and Hospital Kuala Lumpur.
